Another successful golf tournament in the record book.

This just in! Fourteen teams of golfers playing in the Pamlico Community College Foundation Pepsi Cup Tournament raised nearly $10,000 to fund student scholarships at Pamlico Community College, a record.

A note about the amount raised. One high school graduating class of more than 500 students received an aggregate total of $3.6 million in scholarships. The cost of higher education is high. Students need help no matter where they attend college or trade school. While $10,000 raised at the golf tournament is a great amount and so deeply appreciated, the need is constant. The PCC Foundation needs the public’s support in helping students – this is an ongoing effort for an ongoing need.

Cleve H. Cox, PCC President, was joined by WCTI-TV, NewsChannel 12 Chief Meteorologist, Skip Waters, and weekend meteorologist, Tori Shaw, to signal the tee off for the 2013 Pamlico Community College Foundation Pepsi Cup Golf Tournament. Coordinated by Melody Henry, the tournament raises thousands each year for student scholarships. TV-12’s weather personalities, as expected, delivered the sunshine, the golfers and sponsors delivered the funds, and the Foundation delivered the fun for all on hand.

Students to receive these scholarships deliver the gratitude.

Graduation 2013

With pomp and circumstance, one leg of an educational journey was completed for scores of Pamlico Community College students Friday evening during Commencement at the Ned Everett Delamar Center.

Honored

Jim Curry, Vice President, Administration, presented the award for 2013 Staff Member of the Year to Sherry Raby, left, PCC Controller. Dr. María Fraser-Molina, Vice President, Instruction, recognized Al Collins as the 2013 Outstanding Instructor. Jim Kellenberger, Executive Director, PCC Foundation, honored Marilyn Ragan as the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus. Jamie Gibbs, Vice President, Student Services, saluted Amber Pegram as the 2013 Outstanding Student of the Year.

Commencement speaker, Dr. Larry W. Gracie, urged students to play the hand they were dealt and use education to propel them forward to new and higher goals. Gracie retired as PCC’s Vice President of Instructional Services in April.

Dr. María Fraser-Molina, who succeeded Gracie, spoke briefly on the diversity of accomplishments among the graduates.

William Ormond & Mark Buck are completing two years of college credits the same month they earn high school diplomas, saving valuable time and resources. Sherri Hopkins, completed requirements for two degrees. Allyson Rice, president of Student Government and a grandmother, did not allow a major illness nor having to take a semester off to work keep her from earning the coveted two-year degree in Environmental Science.

PCC Students Make Clean Sweep

Unable to participate in a clean up of area roadsides, creek banks, and streams on Earth Day due to scheduling conflicts, Ally Rice, president of the PCC Student Government Association and an Environmental Science student, coordinated a clean-up, Saturday, April 27. A contingent of students, staff members, family and friends swept the headwaters of Goose Creek along State Road 1005, 7 miles northwest of Arapahoe.

Susan Adams, the college recruiter and financial aid technician, along with Richard Garrett, Chair of Continuing Education, helped with logistics.

The group collected bag after bag of trash, mostly plastic, metal automobile parts, a tire, furniture fragments, a television, and most disturbing, what was suspected to be evidence of illegal drug activity. After their toil was done in that area, the group relaxed on the roadside as if they were watching the television they had recovered.

Time to play golf - Help deserving students!

The annual Pamlico Community College Foundation (PCCF) Pepsi Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 18. The tournament returns to the southern most tip of Pamlico County, the famed Minnesott Golf Course on the shores of the Neuse River. Tournament officials have neither confirmed nor denied the possibility of a Phil Mickelson guest appearance.

It has been confirmed that TV NewsChannel 12 Chief Meteorologist will be on hand to welcome golfers and pronounce a golf forecast at the start of the event. He will be accompanied by NewsChannel 12’s weekend meteorologist, Tori Shaw,who will herald the shot-gun start with the sounds from one of her brass instruments.

Top prize for a hole- in-one on #5 is a $10,000 trip to Hawaii with other prizes for a hole-in-one on any par 3. Scores attend PCC Job Fair seeking life changing opportunities

A variety of employers from across the region as well as agencies that provide services to enhance employment security and advancement – not the least of which is Pamlico Community College providing job training and occupational skills classes – embraced scores of residents from across the area at the college’s anual Job Fair, Thursday, April 18.

The Job Fair was sponsored by Pamlico Community College, its JobLink center, Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board, and New Choices.
